Facebook for Beginners
What is Facebook?
Facebook 101 – Facebook is a social networking website that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. Originally designed for college students, “The Facebook” was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook [“The” was dropped] is the world’s largest social network, with more than 1 billion users worldwide. Facebook’s mission (via Facebook): ” is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.”
Why use Facebook?
Have you ever wondered why people like using Facebook? After all, there are already lots of other ways to communicate online, such as email, instant messaging, and so on. Right? Yeah… Remember those photos from your vacation that were so large, you could only send one or two every 10 minutes or so and you took about 100 pics? There was sort of a disconnect there; no real engagement, it took some of your friends and family a few hours or days to reply and tell you how much they enjoyed your photos. There was no real engagement there. Then came Facebook.
What makes Facebook unique is the ability to connect and share with the people you care about the most, at the same time. It also allows you to expand your social circles and reach. For many, having a Facebook is now an expected part of being online, much like having an email was. And since Facebook is so popular, other websites have integrated Facebook friendly features. This means you can use a single Facebook account to sign in to different services across the Web. Much like you could with your email. Sort of understanding it now huh? After joining Facebook initially in 2006, I deleted my Facebook Profile but later decided to return, in 2008, to the social networking site that I felt had a future. One of the factors that drew me was that you could update [back then] Facebook and it would also post to your Myspace and Twitter accounts. Talk about being innovative! Facebook was rocking. Facebook enabled people to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them. Connect with me on Facebook – Felix L.
